TALENT SEARCH

No we’re not looking for the next American Idol but we are looking for folks that can bang a drum or some bongos, strum a guitar, jam on a saxophone or French horn, draw a bow on a violin (or fiddle) or shake some maracas. Can you flex the golden pipes?  We need you in the choir too! SBC is looking to expand our choir and worship orchestra and we need you. Call the church office or just show up for instrumental practice (6:00 PM Wednesday evening) or choir practice (7:35 PM Wednesday evening). If God has given you a gift, you're commanded not to hide it, but to use it for his GLORY!! So get that old clarinet out of the attic and join us on Wednesday evening.

LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME? WHAT CAN I EXPECT IF I COME TO SALEM?

If you are considering relocating to our area or visiting the metropolitan Richmond, VA area we would love to have you be our guest for Sunday school and our worship services. If you’re new to church or just checking Salem out, we’d like you to know a few things.

First, relax, you’re among friends. If you decide to attend one of our services, you won’t be singled out or put on the spot—we promise. Our desire is to make your visit as comfortable and positive as possible. As a Salem guest you can get to know us at your own pace. There are plenty of opportunities to meet people and get involved, but we realize that everyone operates on their own timetable. We do try and make contact with everyone who shows interest in Salem Baptist Church, and we would really appreciate it if you fill out a guest card when you're ready for that contact.

We have tried to anticipate some of the questions you may have before you visit for the first time. You will find the answers to those questions listed below. If you have additional questions, contact the church office at 784-4171 and we will be happy to answer them.

What will I find at Salem?

A caring congregation that will gladly welcome you
Preaching/teaching that is centered on the Word of God
Ministries to meet the spiritual needs of every age

What time should I arrive?
We have a time of refreshments and fellowship starting at 8:30 AM and then Sunday school begins at 8:45 AM. Feel free to take a “cup of joe” or a cup of juice to class. If you’d like information about available study groups, contact our Sunday School Director, John Davidson at 784-4171. Regular worship starts at 10:00 AM. You may on your first visit want to plan to arrive 15 minutes early or so but don't feel guilty if you get there a little late. This will give you time to park, find the Sunday school class of your choice, or if you just want to visit worship time, find a good spot to sit in our auditorium. Greeters are available to welcome you and help you find your way around.

What should I wear?
Be yourself! Wear what makes you feel comfortable. At a Salem worship service you will see a mix of everything within our congregation, from relaxed to conservative. We are much more interested in you connecting with God than we are in what you wear.

What about my children?
We provide a safe place for your children. Nursery is available for small children, Sunday school provides age specific classes for all ages, youth and teen and Children’s Church is available during the message for little ones ages 4-9.

Am I expected to give when the offering plate goes by?
No!   The offering is a form of worship for our regular attendees. You are welcome to give, but we hope that when you visit Salem you will be receiving from us not the other way around. The only thing we encourage non-members to put in the offering plate is a guest card.

Will I have to wear a name tag or be recognized as a guest at your service?
Not at all! We want you to be relaxed and comfortable in our services and you will never be singled out.  We will ask that you fill out a visitors card and we will ask if we can follow-up with you and your family but we never demand that you comply with either request.   If you do hang around after the service, you can expect that someone might ask you about yourself or what brought you to Salem. We want to welcome you, not make you feel like an outsider.

Can I get some refreshments?
We have a time of fellowship with coffee and lemonade at 8:30 AM and guests are encouraged to join us.

What about your Services?
Worship services are a time for us to come together, meet God and learn about him. It is a time of fellowship, celebration and learning. Throughout the service, you are welcome to join in or sit back and observe — however you feel most comfortable. We have a blend of traditional and contemporary praise time: you might sing one of the great hymns of faith or participate in a Keith Getty tune from the projected lyrics on our screen. We have an organ, piano, trumpets and the guitars and drum set don’t collect dust.

What kind of message can I expect?
Our worship time centers around a clear, practical, and relevant message from God's Word presented by Zack Zbinden, our Pastor. Pastor Zbinden is gifted in sharing the life-changing message of the Bible in ways we can understand and apply to our daily life. Most importantly, the message is designed to share God’s gift of eternal life though a relationship with his Son, Jesus Christ.

Our Purpose...

A body of believers who have been called together to do God's work in God's way. Our heart is to make and grow disciples of Christ so that we may be used by God to impact one of the fastest growing areas in the Richmond area-- Goochland County.

God has called Salem to be Christ-centered in worship, Bible-based in teaching, and mission-minded in ministry. We are committed to helping you discover the real meaning and purpose for your life. We exist to lead people into a relationship with Jesus Christ, and to equip them to serve Him and make Him known.

If you are looking for a place to serve the Lord Jesus Christ, we invite you to come. If you need to see the love of Christ, we ask you to come and experience God with us. If you need friends, we invite you to join us. Whatever your need might be, we want you to know that God cares and so do we.

Mission...
God is Building a Fellowship to Seek and Serve Him!

Vision...

We are a blessed people. God has walked with us, He has led us, and occasionally He has carried us. But throughout it all, He has loved us. 12 years ago in November of 1995, God showed us the first step in what would be the beginning of our new mission as Salem Baptist Church.   Pastor Ed Charmical obeyed the Lord’s leading to pursue 16.43 acres of land on Broad Street to house that future. Through the years, the vision has grown and become clearer to us. God has been faithful, and Salem Baptist Church has been obedient to his leading. Today, we are many steps closer to realizing the mission that God has called us to. We have worked diligently on the design of our property so that we can provide the best facilities possible for our growing ministries.

Salem Baptist Church has remained faithful to God and followed his direction for over one hundred and forty five years. God has now determined that we are worthy to harvest new fields and has provided the land and opportunity. Those who have come before us have labored and all of our fellowship can be counted a part of their harvest. Now it is time for us to stand on their foundation and harvest for what we have not labored. As we look to the future, we should all be seeking God’s will and direction for our lives and ministry. And the undeniable truth that we have realized is that God has called us to move our ministry to our new location on Broad Street.
